Seven graduates in medicine set to join health sector

We often complain of the lack of Seychellois doctors when we visit the hospitals. This lack is being taken seriously by the government who, everySomasundaram Rajasundaram year, tries its best to send Seychellois students for further studies in the field of medicine.

This year seven graduates came back home after successfully completing five years of study in India and Malaysia.

Currently there are 99 Seychellois doctors and 383 doctors from various parts of the world registered with the Seychelles Medical Council. Most of the expatriate doctors come here for short consultations/work and need to be registered.

Seychelles Nation had the opportunity to meet the new graduates who talked about their experiences in India and Malaysia and also gave some advice to all those finding sciences a challenge.

They also talked about their upcoming two-year internship, during which they will have to spend four months in six different departments in public health centres. They all left Seychelles in 2009 for two and half years of study in India then two and half years in Malaysia.

Somasundaram Rajasundaram chose Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics for his A-Levels at the School of Advanced Level Studies (Sals), Anse Royale.

Following his brilliant results, he chose to make a career in medicine. “I had a fantastic and enriching experience in both Manipal (India) and Melaka (Malaysia). Study-wise it was more challenging in India than Malaysia as it involved rote memorisation, whereas in Malaysia it was all practical based and clinically oriented. Outside of studies, I had the chance to visit many places in India and Malaysia and explore the various cultures. I truly enjoyed my five years abroad. If you are finding science difficult, ask yourself if it could be because of a lack of interest in it. Once you appreciate a field and develop an interest in it, difficulties will fade away. Also understanding the basics is vital! As always, working hard at something also makes it easier.”

ECPD keen in setting up international centre for post-graduate studies in Seychelles

Mr ManchamSeychelles’ founding President Sir James Mancham has been mandated by the secretary general of the European Centre for Peace and Development (ECPD), Prof. Negoslav Ostojic, to open discussions with the Seychelles government concerning the ECPD’s interest in creating an International Centre for Postgraduate Studies in Seychelles.

The ECPD, founded 30 years ago, has its headquarters in Belgrade, Serbia and operates in association with UN mandated University for Peace.

Mr Mancham was in Belgrade over the last three days this week - first to finalise discussions concerning publication of a Serbian edition of his recently published work ‘SEYCHELLES - The saga of a small nation navigating the cross-currents of a big world’ and to make a presentation to distinguished academicians and scholars of ECPD on the topic ‘Impact of contemporary global trends and their repercussions on small countries with special view on the Balkan region’.

Mr Mancham was specially welcomed by academician Prof. Ljubisha Adamovich, a member of the Board of Directors of ECPD, who introduced him as a man of global commitments, who has the last 20 years been associated with ECPD's search for peace globally, with special interest in revolving contentions and conflict within the Balkan region.

Yesterday Mr Mancham was specialy interviewed by National Serbian Televison, at its headquarters in central Belgrade, for its weekly afternews foreign programme, on the situation in the region against the background of the competing influences of big powers.

Mr Mancham once again regretted the policy of ‘Might is Right’. However, he said that sometimes historical grievances had to give way to present day realities if a nation is to move forward.

Mr Mancham leaves Belgrade today for Florence, Italy where he is to attend the 2014 annual meeting of Le Club de Madrid.

15 join nursing profession

A group of 15 newly qualified nurses have officially joined the nursing profession.

This was during a ceremony held on Friday afternoon at the Sheihk Khalifah conference centre which was attended by health minister Mitcy Larue who also presented the new nurses with their certificate of registration.

Also present to witness the event were key officials of the health ministry, health professionals including the registrar of the Seychelles Nurses and Midwives Council (SNMC) Winnifred Agricole, fellow nurses, the director of the National Institute of Health and Social Studies (NIHSS) Maryline Lucas and parents of the new nurses.

The group followed their training locally at the NIHSS.
Addressing the new nurses and everyone present SNMC chairperson Beryl Camille said the nurses workforce being the majority of health professionals at the point of care, has been and continues to be instrumental in the progress in health and wellbeing of our people and the development of the health system.

Advanced CT scan for Seychelles Hospital

The Seychelles Hospital has received a new 20 multi-slice computed tomography (CT) scan machine worth R5.9 million from Land Marine Ltd.

The handover ceremony of the new piece of equipment which has been installed in the newly refurbished CT scan room at the Sheikh Khalifa Diagnostic Centre, took place yesterday afternoon.

It was the chairman of Land Marine Ltd board Glenny Savy who handed over the CT scan to Health Minister Mitcy Larue.

This was in the presence of Vice-President Danny Faure, the chairperson of the Health Care Agency (HCA) board, Ambassador Maurice Loustau-Lalanne, members of the HCA, key health officers among other guests.
