EU citizens who enter another country "solely" to claim benefits can be excluded from welfare schemes, according to a judgement by the European Court of Justice.
The ECJ declared that EU member states must "have the possibility of refusing" social benefits to "economically inactive" EU citizens who moved to the country in order to claim welfare, writes Duncan Robinson.
The ruling will be welcomed in countries such as the UK and Germany, who have both looked at introducing clampdowns on so-called "benefit tourism" in a bid to stave off increasingly popular anti-immigration movements in both countries.
